Families, associates, activists, friends and politicians massed to the Opic Estate at Agbara in Ogun State, as one of the daughters of late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, the legendary human rights lawyer opened a hospital in his honor on Friday, April 22, 2016.
Dr. Hafsat Fawehinmi-Oni is a medical professional and had practiced for several years abroad before returning home to establish a hospital in honour of her father. The hospital opening was done on April 22 which is the 78th posthumous birthday of Chief Fawehinmi.
Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin who led other activists said the human rights legend was a man of the masses and the hospital which is built by his daughter at subsidised health service is in line with Gani Fawehinmi’s ideals.
“This is part of what we mean when we say Gani lives forever”, Dr. Joe Odumakin said at the occasion.
“Even though we can no longer have his physical presence with us, his impacts are always increasing and we can see one of them in this new fulfillment, she continued. She also called on supports for Hafsat, especially as the staff of the hospital are envisioning to go to IDP’s camps to support them with free medical services.
The widow of the Gani Fawehinmi and mother of Hafsat Fawehinmi-Oni commended the initiative by her daughter, pledging to continue to stand by her.
While commenting at the hospital opening, Dr. Fawehinmi-Oni said the hospital is cited at Agbara Estate because the land was willed to her by her father, and she had determined to use it to immortalize her father.
She said she has now spent all her life savings to see the dream come true, while also calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to come to her support in order to continue with vision to make the hospital a state-of-the-heart facility that will address issues that Nigerians take abroad.
“My father died of cancer and so I want to treat all sorts of sickness here,” Dr. Hafsat said.
“My father loved this country so much he refused to come abroad for treatment because he wanted Nigerians to get their treatments here,” she added.
